#GL: One good thing that could come from cancellation

My ears perked up when the following was said on NPR

After 72 years of weddings and funerals, drunken confessions, faked pregnancies and deathly illnesses...

Obviously they were going to talk about a soap. But, then the entire sentence hit me:

After 72 years of weddings and funerals, drunken confessions, faked pregnancies and deathly illnesses, "Guiding Light" is going off the air.

On this nice April afternoon I had my car windows down as I sat at a traffic light. I moaned "No, No, No, No", emphasizing each "NO" with a pound to my steering wheel.

Wait, it's April 1. This is obviously some silly April Fools Joke (as I instantly slid into denial). However, the writing had been on the wall for some time. This didn't come out of nowhere, but after months of speculation in all of the Soap World.

I am getting a bit teary eyed as I type this. GL was my first love. It taught me soap. GL was the reason I watched other shows. I got hooked on ATWT when tuning into GL a few minutes early. From there I got hooked on the 12:30 story.

When I was in high school, I would race home to try to catch the last 15 minutes of the show . It was the hay day of the Four Musketeers and prior to owning a VCR. I was, and am, still devastated by the cancellation--which is probably why it has taken me a few weeks to even write about it.

I do feel one good thing could come from cancellation--freedom to the writers. Current soap writers always have to worry about going one step to far, painting that character into a corner. That doesn't mean they have always avoided it, but their trying to undo some of those "whoopsies" has made for some hare-brained storylines.

Now they can do daring stuff in the last 6 months. Make Frank a psychopath (and his love life of late could easily drive him there)? No problem! Pair up Buzz and Lizzie? Great idea! A Dinah and AC reunion? Why the heck not?!

Think of the people you could just bring back from the dead. The pairings you could put together. The storylines you could write!

I think I will like the roller-coaster that GL should send me on until September 18. That is my only request--well, that and bring back India!
